Gary Doherty
Born and raised in Ireland until the age of 6yrs old, my family and I moved to the Uk to reside in Luton which is north west of London. After the move I began my love for the game. I joined my local team Luton Town FC, who are now playing in the Championship League, one league below the Premier league. There I progressed through the youth teams and made my first team debut at the age of 16 yrs and then signed my first professional contract on my 17th birthday.
After three years with Luton, I was lucky to sign for my first Premier league club, Tottenham Hotspur under the management of George Graham. When George left the club shortly after my arrival, England Manager and Spurs legend, Glenn Hoddle took over and I had the pleasure of working under him for my three years at the club. After making my debut against Manchester United on a Saturday, I then made my International debut with the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday which was the craziest week of my life.I spent five years with Tottenham before moving to Norwich City FC who were also in the Premier League at the time and I spent another six years there.
I began my coaching career with League One club, Wycombe Wanderers in England, which is where I retired from my professional career in 2014. I was working with their young professionals within the reserve league before moving to Boston during the pandemic looking for a new challenge in the US. Post Covid I decided to move to Chicago for a bigger challenge and after speaking with many clubs throughout Chicagoland, I felt Chicago City was the closest thing that would replicate a Premier League academy in England due to the strong family club culture along with the mission and philosophy. It was also very important for me to see extensive knowledge and experience within the coaching staff, and the direction the leadership are looking to take the organization. It felt like the perfect fit for me and I am very excited to be a part of the team.
I had the pleasure of playing against some of the worlds greats in Thierry Henry for Arsenal, both Ronaldo’s, and one of the worlds greats, Zinedine Zidane. My favorite stadium playing was Old Trafford where I made my Premier League debut and my favorite goal I scored was against the Invincible's Arsenal side in the at Old Trafford in the FA Cup Semi Final for 2003-04 season for Spurs.
On a personal level I am a huge NFL fan and love live music.
